I know I’m beyond tardy in posting these, but better late than never, eh? These are a selection of photographs I took during the trip home from West Virginia. Yes, many of them are heavily photoshopped — some are not. Why? Because I found the originals to be exceptionally boring.
That, and it rained almost the entire time.

A collection of crops from small acrylic & ink works on paper. Most are fairly recent, with the exception of the landscape done in ballpoint pen. I found it scrawled in an old sketchbook so there’s no way to date it accurately, although I’d guess it’s at least 5 years old, if not more. Very typical of the sort of nonsense I would doodle in the margins of class notes.
Yes, I know they’re whimsical little things. Even nihilists can be whimsical.
Sometimes.

But which one?
Hard pressed to find any signs of the turning of the year, I ventured outdoors — only to be met with a surprising lushness. Butterflies in mid-November? What the hell?

Well, here’s the first little bit of press from my show, As the Crow Flies, taken from here:
Acrylic paintings by Jennifer Rusek are on display through Nov. 23 at the Della Brown Taylor Gallery, Davis Fine Arts Building, West Virginia State University. Call 766-3196 or visit www.solocrow.com.
Granted, I’m all the way down at the bottom of the page, but hey, it’s a start, right?
The diptych pictured above (4x8ft) is entitled, Crow Takes a Holiday, and is currently on display at WVSU.

Here’s the pumpkin I carved for Halloween this year. It’s a wolf howling. Yes, I know it’s a little hard to make out — especially since the nose curled around the pumpkin, and was therefore difficult to get a good shot of without distorting the view of the rest of the carving.
I foolishly decided to hearken back to my misspent days of youth when I would often draw up similar tribalish tattoo flash for customers. [At the risk of sounding like the fogey that complains about going uphill in the snow both ways to school: We actually resized ALL the flash by hand, since there wasn't a stencil machine in our shop until much later!].
Note to self: What is easily rendered with Sharpie is infinitely harder to pull off in the medium of squash fruits.
Hope everyone had a good one, and sorry I missed all the parties this year because I was on the road.
Speaking of the road — I need to get off my ass and edit those travel pictures. Gah!
